The 8 inch floppy disk (8 inch are approximately 20,3 cm) was originally developed by a computer based company called IBM. The floppy disk was used for loading simple instructions into computers, which at that time were still pretty big. With the development of smaller computers, which could be controlled by one person only, this 8 inch floppy disks were also used in them, because at that time they were acknowledged as a fast storage medium with high capacity. As a matter of fact, the usage in smaller computers was limited because the drive for using the floppy disks was still very expensive.
