Floppy Disks

History

Extinction

From about the mid-'90s, the disk was gradually replaced by the pressed CDs as storage medium. Reasons were the increasing amounts of data and the lack of development of better standards of floppy disks. Then, when CD burners were still favorable, the Internet became more sophisticated and nearly any computer could read and write flash memory, the disk had disappeared almost completely from daily usage. In March 2011 Sony announced the cessation of their disk production. Verbatim is thus left as the last producer.
