50 years ago, magnetic tape memories were invented. They had been an inherent part of every backup system in enterprises. After a couple of time, they became less important. The new rotating memory modules were more suitable for industry.
Although the magnetic tape memories had a faster and more fascinating history of development then most other IT techonolgies.
In 1952, a very tall memory unit could save 100 bit per inch (bpi) in 9 layers on a tape with a length of 330 m.
1975, memory volume had increased to 1600 bpi - now one MB of data could be saved on only 25m tape.
Nowadays, a S-DLT-device is able to save 448 layers with 150.000 bpi per layer. Thats one MB date per 2.5 mm tape.
