The successor of the 8 inch floppy disk was the 5,25 inch floppy (approximately 13.3 cm). The smaller size made this kind of floppy disk more interesting for the small computers, which were mainly used for word processing. For this kind of computers it was a a good storage because it was not just small but also cheap. The normal form of saving data on hard disks, which we use today, was not used back at that time, what means that the floppy disk was already necessary for booting the computer. That had the result, that some computers already had 2 drives for saving time, as they did not had to change the floppy disks that often. The 5,25 inch floppy disk was supported by the common operation systems of that time, what gave it the chance of a wider spread. Did you already wonder why your computer starts with the letter C for the drives? That is because the letters A and B are still reserved for floppy disk drives.
