1953: diode plug-in unit and the IBM 650
Introduction
1953 was a very pivatal year in the history of IBM. Computer should bring in next prestige profit. Besides reliability and easy programming a low production cost had top priotity in the design and profit. The easy operation by the console and the slim instruction set made him attractive to companies and universities. With this model IBM provides a basis for the dominance in the computer market over the next decades. The commercial marketing of computers was made possible and the sales volume clarifies that there is an actual requirement for such devices and a market for it existed.
For construction of logic circuits at the IBM 650 were used diodes. A diode is an electrical component where current is able to pass only in one direction. In the electronics mostly the rectifier diode is used. It transforms alternating current into direct current. Reason for this is the transition between a „negatively charged“ semiconductor material and a „positively charged“ semiconductor material. Due to impressed voltage the transition is either conductive or has an insulating effect. With the help of sketches these two operations are illustrated.
