1964: control store

What is a control store?

The control store is an integral part of current processor architectures, along with the other typical components, such as the processing unit and the register set (Von Neumann architecture). The control store is often a read-only memory (ROM) or (more rarely) a volatile memory. It includes micro instructions, hardware commands of the lowest logical level, the computer can build the machine instructions (opcode) from. Therefor the microprogram control unit reads the commands from the control store. Micro instructions are stored in the control store as microcode in binary form. The access speed depends on the processor computing power, but today is usually less than 10 nanoseconds.
