The 8 Inch Floppy Disk was originally developed by IBM for being able to load microcode into their mainframe computers though they were also used on microcomputers later because the 8 inch floppy disk was known as a fast storage medium with a high capacity which was affordable even for small companies and individuals. As a matter of fact the usage in microcomputers was limited because the drives for reading the 8 inch floppy disk were still pretty expensive.
